Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday said Iran has “every reason” not to trust the US, while asserting that Washington has “every reason” to trust Tehran.

Speaking in India during a BRICS conclave, Araghchi said there is no military solution to issues involving Iran and called for a “greater role” for India in peace efforts across West Asia.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran has “every reason” not to trust the US, while asserting that Americans have “every reason” to trust Tehran. He also welcomed a “constructive role” for India in regional peace efforts.

Highlighting the trust deficit between Tehran and Washington, Araghchi said ongoing negotiations were being affected by the lack of confidence from the Iranian side.

The Iranian foreign minister further said Tehran was prepared to assist ships belonging to countries not involved in the conflict with Iran to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had effectively restricted movement through the strategic waterway — which previously carried nearly one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies — following the start of US-Israeli attacks on February 28.
